What do you need?

No previous experience required! All tools and materials will be provided for you including tiles and pots to carve, but you are welcome to bring your own leather hard work or any tools you’d like to use. Items made in the workshop can be bisque fired and clear glazed at no extra cost if requested :)

What is sgraffito and mishima?

While both are intricate decorative techniques performed on ‘leather hard’ clay; sgraffito is created by scratching/carving through a surface layer of slip exposing the clay body beneath, whereas mishima explores the inlaying of slip or underglaze within the carvings themselves!

About the instructor:

Jurga Hoffman is a ceramic artist based in Vancouver, BC. Her pieces are often adorned with hand-painted and carved original designs inspired by nature, and finished in a variety of glazes, textures and colors.

Jurga’s artistic journey began two decades ago with a camera and a sketchpad. Through photography and drawing portraits she developed a deep appreciation for color, light and detail. After falling in love with the medium of clay, her wheel-thrown pots became canvas for realistic drawings, intricate carvings and ‘painting’ with glazes.

  • Cancelations/Refunds are accepted up to 7 days prior to a class or workshop start date, less an admin fee of $50 for classes/workshops worth $200 and up, or $25 for those below $200. Refunds are not possible within 7 days of a class or workshop commencing.
